Queensland dual sector in the balance

31 August 2012

It’s unclear whether Queensland will proceed with its first dual-sector university.

Queensland Education and Training Minister John-Paul Langbroek told the Australian Council for Private Education and Training’s national conference that a proposed merger of Central Queensland’s university and TAFE, which has been on the backburner since the March state election, would go ahead.

We’re absolutely committed to doing it.  [But] we want to make sure if we do it, we get it right.

However the commitment doesn’t appear to be iron-clad, with the minister acknowledging the matter is still to be considered by the Queensland cabinet.

Meanwhile, the minister has received an interim report from the Skills and Training Taskforce.  Langbroek says the report takes an in-depth look at TAFE and outlines recommendations about how it could be revitalised.

The interim report hasn’t been released.

Submissions to the Taskforce close on 7 September and it is to provide its final report to the Queensland government in November.
