___________________________________________________________________________________________ Shake up for rental scheme 13 March 2014 | The government has flagged a shake-up of the National Rental Affordability Scheme (NRAS) in the wake of revelations the program has been manipulated to build student housing that is being let to wealthy foreign students. Two developers behind an 823-bed NRAS development in Sydney tapped more than $80 million in subsidies to construct a building to be filled largely by international students. Universities have also snapped up thousands of NRAS incentives to build large blocks of studio accommodation that is often taken up by fee-paying international … [Read more...]
Lilydale’s future up for grabs
The Australian | 12 March 2014 ………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………… Swinburne University may consider selling its mothballed Lilydale campus for non-educational purposes. ………………………………………………………………………………………………… Swinburne has officially stated its preference is to sell the site under the current educational zoning. But the information memorandum from real estate agents Knight Frank makes much of the potential for the site to be rezoned, which could increase the value of the site and is stoking local community fears that the prospect of restoring higher education provision at the campus could be lost. Swinburne's head of government affairs Andrew Dempster says that, … [Read more...]
VCA takes over police stables
27 February 2014 After many years of negotiation, the Victorian College of the Arts is to take over the Victoria Police Force horse stables, located at the rear of the college on Melbourne’s Southbank. The stables will be transformed into artists’ studios and exhibition space. The police has long resisted giving up the space, ostensibly on the basis of a police regulation that its mounted branch has to be located within "fast galloping distance" of Government House, the residence of the Governor. The $42.5 million project is being funded by the Victorian government, The University of Melbourne, the VCA and philanthropic bodies including the Myer Foundation and the Ian Potter … [Read more...]

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Education and training separated There was speculation after the announcement of Tony Abbott's ministry early in the week as to who would be handling VET matters within the education portfolio. The VET side of the tertiary sector has actually landed in the lap of former and once more industry minister Ian McFarlane, along with science and research. It's a curious decision to separate the tertiary sector in that way, although not without precedent: VET was located in the business portfolio in Victoria in 2006 but reunited with education by … [Read more...]
UC puts campus up for development
The Canberra Times | 13 September 2013 The University of Canberra (UC) is opening up 40 hectares of its main campus in Belconnen for development in the hope of generating $100 million in capital investment each year for the next decade. A specially-appointed campus development board chaired by business leader Jim Service has spent two years working on the project. UC vice-chancellor Stephen Parker said potential development could range from residential ''alumni'' villages, to health research and development bodies wanting to be in close proximity to the new UC hospital, government agencies, commercial organisations, technology parks, arts and culture complexes, sporting … [Read more...]
Footscray set to become “edgy university town”
The Age | 17 September Footscray would shed its battler image and transform into an edgy university town in a proposal from Victoria University (VU) and Maribyrnong City Council. A report prepared by the university and council said Footscray was perceived as dated, with a ''historical association with crime and the drug trade''. Rather than acting as a welcoming doorway to the exciting west, it has been a psychological barrier. Until Footscray is rejuvenated, it will act like a cork in a bottle, hindering the west's development, rather than fostering it. VU and the council have signed a memorandum of understanding to build student accommodation and establish arts and … [Read more...]
Lilydale grant to be scrutinised
The Age | 16 September 2013 The Victorian Auditor-General is set to investigate a $100,000 payment to Yarra Ranges Council over a potential conflict of interest. The government gave the money to the council so it could investigate and draw up a plan for the future use of the closed Swinburne University Lilydale campus. In August, Labor MP Shaun Leane called on the Auditor-General to investigate the payment, saying there was an ''obvious conflict of interest'' as the council said it wanted to move its offices to the site. Auditor-General John Doyle replied to Leane saying he ''would be pleased to consider the matters you have raised as part of the next VAGO [Victorian … [Read more...]

The Australian | 2 August 2013 Swinburne University and the Northern Melbourne Institute of TAFE (NMIT) have signed a memorandum of understanding for NMIT to buy Swinburne's Prahan campus in inner Melbourne in a deal that is subject to Victorian government approval. Pending final negotiations and approvals, there are plans for courses currently offered at Prahran by Swinburne in theatre, Specialised Make-Up and Costume for Performance to … [Read more...]

VU plans CBD “vertical campus”
The Age | 8 July 2013 The site of a historic women's venereal disease clinic in Melbourne's Little Lonsdale Street will be reborn as a 32-storey ''vertical campus'' for Victoria University, the latest tower proposal approved by the state government. The redevelopment, expected to cost about $100 million, will enable more than 25,000 students to attend the university, and was in keeping with the heritage value of the site. The tower will allow the university to move from three separate locations in the city. A completion date is yet to be determined. … [Read more...]
