Lilydale grant suspended over potential “conflict of interest”

Herald-Sun    |    8 November 2013 The Herald-Sun reports that “thousands of dollars of taxpayers' money has (sic) been wasted after a bungle over a state government grant to a local council”. The Yarra Ranges Shire Council was given a $100,000 grant in July to look into options for how the former Swinburne University site in Lilydale could be used for education purposes.  But before the council was handed the cash it had announced it wanted to use part of the site to house its new municipal offices. A complaint was made to the Victorian Ombudsman about a potential conflict of interest over the site's use – namely, "the council has a conflict of interest in being the custodian of … [Read more...]

The Age    |    16 September 2013 The Victorian Auditor-General is set to investigate a $100,000 payment to Yarra Ranges Council over a potential conflict of interest. The government gave the money to the council so it could investigate and draw up a plan for the future use of the closed Swinburne University Lilydale campus. In August, Labor MP Shaun Leane called on the Auditor-General to investigate the payment, saying there was an ''obvious conflict of interest'' as the council said it wanted to move its offices to the site. Auditor-General John Doyle replied to Leane saying he ''would be pleased to consider the matters you have raised as part of the next VAGO [Victorian … [Read more...]

Council plan to “anchor” Lilydale campus

Swineburne2

TAFE in Victoria     |       12 June 2013 Yarra Ranges Council will attempt to buy part of the Swinburne University Lilydale campus in a bold attempt to maintain the site as an education centre. The council plans to build its new $14 million offices on the site, a strategic move it claims is the only way post-secondary education will remain in Lilydale. Mayor Jim Child said that after nine months of discussions with different education providers, there was "very little serious interest in acquiring the site for education" and something needed to happen. "In light of the lack of interest in the site from the education sector, we believe council ownership would give us the … [Read more...]

Lilydale to be mothballed

swinburne

The Australian    |   9 June 2013 Swinburne University is set to mothball its Lilydale campus in Melbourne next month after so far failing to find a new tertiary education provider to takeover the site. Local Yarra Ranges council Mayor Jim Child has admitted that there is little serious interest in acquiring the site for education, forcing the council to consider purchasing the site from Swinburne and using it to relocate its offices there as the anchor tenant. He blamed the lack of interest on State government funding cuts to TAFEs and the trend among students towards online learning.  The National Tertiary Education Union has said that so far Deakin University, La … [Read more...]

swinburne

NTEU News     |       June 2013 A rally to save Swinburne’s Lilydale Campus from being allegedly sold off to become council offices has been called by the National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU) for 2pm next Friday (14 June).  The campus is scheduled for closure on 1 July as a result of the Victorian Government’s $300 million cut to TAFE funding last year. The NTEU says that in the past week it had made two startling discoveries.  According to NTEU’s Josh Cullinan: At the Yarra Valley Educational Precinct meeting last week the Yarra Ranges Council CEO announced he had been secretly negotiating with Swinburne and local Liberal politicians to shut the campus. In an astounding … [Read more...]

NTEU News Room   |     25 March 2013 The National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU) has commenced proceedings in the Federal Court  against Swinburne University of Technology  following its decision last July to shut its Lilydale campus and the relocation of the design faculty Prahran campuses in the wake of the Victorian Coalition government’s $290 million cuts to TAFE. The NTEU alleges Swinburne management was required by its collective agreement with the union to consult with staff and the NTEU prior to making major decisions such as shutting-down campuses. "It is making a political point about them not abiding by the agreement and their requirements to consult," NTEU division … [Read more...]
