Victorian skills and higher education minister Peter Hall is resigning from State Parliament almost nine months early, ahead of a cabinet reshuffle which has seen Nick Wakeling been appointed as his replacement. ………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………… He had previously announced he would not be standing at the state election to be held in November. But he says “now is the right time for me to step aside and provide an opportunity for the next generation of Nationals to showcase their talents and take this great government into the next election.” Hall famously confessed to TAFE leaders in 2012 that he considered “throwing in the towel” over deep funding cuts to the state’s TAFE sector and that he shared their “emotions of shock, incredulity, disbelief and anger”. He is generally well-respected within the sector.

Finally let’s spare a thought for Peter Hall. He’s publicly stepped away from the serious misgivings he earlier expressed – misgivings that led him to seriously consider resignation – and is vigorously prosecuting the government’s defence of its funding measures. But one suspects that some time or other, Hall will be able to turn to cabinet colleagues and have an “I told you so” moment.
