First tranche of VET reform – TDA welcomes new apprentice support services
TDA welcomed the federal government’s announcement that apprentices and their employers will receive greater support, with an emphasis on apprentice quality and completion.
In a media statement, CEO Martin Riordan said that apprentice completion rates need to be improved, and TAFE Directors had been advocating greater attention – and involvement of major providers like TAFE – to enable apprentice recruitment and quality training, both on-the job and off-the-job.
TDA supported Industry Minister Macfarlane’s decision to scrap the Australian Apprenticeships Centres and replace them with the new $200 million a year Australian Apprenticeship Support Network.
TDA also supported two new youth pathways programs to assist young people to move out of unemployment and undertaker training.

TDA scholarships help out transport and logistics students
Nine TAFE Queensland students from Brisbane received a much needed financial boost and some well deserved recognition last week as part of the TDA National Scholarships Foundation.
The students were awarded Mick Young equity scholarships, made possible through long-term sponsorship by the Transport and Logistics Industry Skills Council (TLISC).
They are all enrolled in Year 12 and completing the Certificate II in Logistics course, recognised in the Transport and Logistics industry training packages at TAFE Queensland Brisbane. They each received a one-off payment of between $500 and $700 to go towards their study expenses.
The ceremony was held at the Mount Gravatt campus and was attended by TAFE Queensland CEO Jodi Schmidt, General Manager TAFE Brisbane Aaron Devine, Executive Director of the TDA National Scholarships Foundation Theresa Collignon, and the General Manager of All Purpose Transport who represented the TLISC, Paul Kahlert.

Trifecta for William Angliss at international education awards
William Angliss Institute student Harriyadi Irawan from Indonesia has won the Premier’s Award for International Education Student of the Year and was also named the winner of the International Student of the Year – Vocational Education and Training category at the Victorian International Education Awards 2014.
In the provider category, William Angliss Institute won the Excellence in International Student Employability and Career Development award.
Having completed his Advanced Diploma of Hospitality Management at William Angliss Institute, Harriyadi will continue his studies at the Institute completing a Bachelor Degree of Hospitality and Tourism in 2016.

Austrade experts to discuss the business potential from international education
Austrade is hosting a series of seminars to examine the story behind the growth in international student numbers and the transnational education opportunities that are likely to arise.
The seminars in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Perth will hear from Austrade education specialists from South Asia, Latin America, the Middle East and Africa.
The seminars will link trends in student recruitment to the nature of transnational opportunities in emerging markets, highlighting prospects for two-way partnerships that respond to local demand and deliver commercial returns. There will also be a panel discussion and break-out groups.
Austrade recently released a report on the strong return to growth in international student numbers in Australia across the schools, ELICOS, VET and HE sectors. Leading indicators point to the continuation of growth during the remainder of 2014 and into 2015.

Financial grants open to students studying abroad
Education Minister Christopher Pyne says grants of up to $5000 each are available to help Australian university students study overseas under the government’s global student mobility programs.
A total of $16.5 million will be added to the existing $100 million under the Colombo Plan to encourage international links for Australian students.
The student mobility programs encompass the International Student Exchange Program, the Study Overseas Short-Term Mobility Program, the Vocational Education and Training Outbound Mobility Program and the AsiaBound Program. The Colombo Plan scheme is still restricted to university-only students.

NSW announces international student finalists
NSW Deputy Premier and Minister for Trade and Investment Andrew Stoner has announced the finalists for the 2014 NSW International Student Awards.
A total of 17 students have been selected from higher education, vocational education and training (VET), school-based, ELICOS and community organisations.
“This year’s finalists in the student award categories come from 10 countries and represent a range of education institutions,” Mr Stoner said.
The awards include a new category – the International Student Community Engagement award – to recognise the initiatives of organisations, community groups and education providers that help international students connect with the community.
