3 May 2013 | Jeannie Rea, NTEU national president, says the union is calling for the restoration of funding to university and student funding following the $2 billion plus cuts announced on 13 April.
University staff and students have borne the brunt of the Government’s broken promises to increase university funding to cover the costs of educating the new generation of students and, specifically, to assist students from disadvantaged backgrounds to achieve a university degree. Since 2011, the Government has slashed $4billion from higher education federal budget allocations.
The message to the Government, and indeed to all politicians, is that universities and their students are now part of the mainstream of Australian life. With over a million students in higher education, one third more students enrolled since 2007 and more than one quarter of Australians holding university degrees, higher education is an important issue for many voters.
