UNSW Newswire 20 September 2012 A research team led by Australian engineers has created the first working quantum bit based on a single atom in silicon, opening the way to ultra-powerful quantum computers of the future. Dr Andrea Morello and Professor Dzurak from the UNSW School of Electrical Engineering and Telecommunications led the team, which includes researchers from the University of Melbourne and University College, London. In a landmark paper published in the journal Nature, the team describes how it was able to both read and write information using the spin, or magnetic orientation, of an electron bound to a single phosphorus atom embedded in a silicon chip. Melbourne embraces MOOC* revolution
University of Melbourne Newsroom 19 September 2012 The University of Melbourne has become the first Australian university to join the online course provider Coursera, which comprises universities such as Princeton and Stanford in the US and offers free subjects to “anyone, anywhere with a computer and Internet access.” Melbourne is one of 17 universities joining Coursera this week, bringing the total number of universities partnering with the online course provider to 33. TAFE staff rally against cuts
The Australian 21 September 2012 The Age 20 September 2012 Teachers and workers at Victorian TAFE institutes and dual sector universities staged an unprotected 24-hour stop-work action on 20 September to protest against $300m in funding cuts. TAFE directors declined to take action to oppose the strike out of sympathy with their staff while skills minister Peter Hall condemned the unprotected strike action as unnecessary and an inconvenience to students and the community.
