Victorian TAFEs face widespread sackings and course cancellations after the funding cuts expected in the state budget (1 May). Sources said the cuts, outlined in The Australian online on Saturday, would mean colleges abandoning training in low-cost areas such as business, retail and recreation, and could force TAFEs out of vital trades training. Victoria will become one of the few jurisdictions in the developed world to fund private and public education institutions on the same footing, by stripping TAFEs of additional base funding of up to 22%. The Baillieu government will slash $100 million from its training budget by cutting funding from about $7 a student hour to as little $1.50 in many courses.
