The Australian Education Union estimates 1500 jobs could go across the state. But The Age reports that a number of institutions it contacted say it is too early to estimate the impact of subsidy cuts on jobs, campuses and courses, a sentiment echoed by Higher Education and Skills Minister Peter Hall. There is no doubt there is (sic) some challenges and indeed there will be changes … [Read more...]
TAFEs target regional seats in protest at cuts
______________________________________________________________________________________________ The Australian 11 May 2012 TAFE unions will target the Baillieu government’s one-seat majority in parliament with a two-year campaign against heavy cuts to public sector training, focusing on marginal regional seats where the cuts are expected to hurt TAFEs hardest, a protest rally of 1500 TAFE supporters has been told. Joe Piper, chief executive at regional South West TAFE, said the funding cuts risked making many entry-level courses unviable because it was unrealistic to expect students to be able to pay the higher fees needed to cover the reduced government subsidies. He said … [Read more...]

AEU Federal: Statement on Victorian TAFE funding cuts
The huge funding cuts announced by the Victorian government to its TAFE institutes will damage the TAFE sector in Victoria and the Victorian economy and community. They will also change the national VET system forever. Late in 2011, the Victorian government ripped millions out of TAFEs budgets. Private providers were left largely untouched. As a result of the 2012 budget cuts, TAFEs will lose initially an estimated $160m annually. Many current TAFE courses will be cancelled and some campuses and facilities are likely to be closed. Some TAFE institutes will have to consider amalgamations, and hundreds of TAFE teachers and administrative staff will lose their jobs. Unless these cuts … [Read more...]
