Uncapping student places has not led to lower standards

Australia‘s university progress rates – which measure the proportion of units students pass – remain fairly stable. Last year, all but one of Australia’s 38 publicly funded universities achieved progress rates of more than 75%, writes Julian Leeser (ACU).This is a stronger performance than in 2002, when there were three universities with progress rates under 75%.
Five of the non-Go8 – Wollongong University, Australian Catholic University, Queensland University of Technology, RMIT and University of Technology Sydney – and seven of the Go8 universities have been in the top 15 universities for the highest progress rates every year since 2009, when the universities began gearing up for the Bradley reforms. Among the 15, progress rates range from 92.07% at ANU to 84.44% at UTAS.
