The Australian | 13 October 2012 A confidential Victorian government document reveals that the careers of up to 260 doctors-in-training could come to a grinding halt next year because they have not been able to obtain supervised positions in hospitals. They include over 90 graduates of Victorian universities, about half of them domestic students who completed their degrees in 2010 or 2011. Doctors say it is the first time they have seen a shortage of places for hospital medical officers, or HMOs, and warn the problem will spread to NSW and Queensland. States could scuttle intern deal
The Australian | 28 September 2012 The Commonwealth government has offered $10 million during emergency talks to find internships for an estimated 180 international medical students who are expected to graduate this year. The graduates can’t practise or continue their medical training until they’ve completed the one-year internships. The Commonwealth has offered the one-off funding to create an extra 100 placements next year, provided the states fund the other 80 places and the students commit to work in regional areas once they’re registered. Job fears for 500 medical graduates
The Age 20 June 2012 Almost 500 medical graduates are expected to be left jobless next year because of a shortage of internships and, in some cases, full-fee paying international students will be given preference over Australian residents for positions in Victorian hospitals. In Victoria, 118 graduates are expected to miss out unless they are accepted in other states and territories. But competition has intensified after the Victorian government brought in a controversial system that gives international students who have studied in Victoria priority over Australian students who have studied outside the state.
