Christmas all year

It’s not just VET funding that’s being looted

Carpet baggers have scammed billions of dollars in the past year alone in public funding in the vocational education and training sector for bugger all outcomes – in one notorious case, one “college” enrolled 4,000 students in 2014, received $46 million in funding and graduated FIVE students – that’s right, nearly $10 million per completion.

Aged rort

As former Australian Competition and Consumer Commission chair Graeme Samuels recently observed: “…..this huge waste of government money is the “inevitable consequence” of governments funding the private sector to deliver a public good.

From the home insulation debacle to export market development grants, film industry tax incentives, health and education subsidies, Mr Samuel says the same thing has been happening “as long as I’ve been alive”.

“Business is much, much smarter than governments, and business knows how to exploit and you can’t deal with that using people sitting in Canberra or Spring Street,” he says. “The rogues – and they’ll be there in any industry – they say with glee, all the way to the bank, ‘Come in spinner’!”

It’s not just the VET sector: wholesale rorting of public funding has been revealed in the childcare sector and now the aged care sector – see Nursing home profits soar as patient care declines .
