The often combative Fred Hilmer has announced via a video address to staff that he will retire retire as vice-chancellor of the University of NSW at the end of the year. ……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

In the video, Hilmer said the university was in a strong position.fred hilmer

I think the right stance is to push hard on new initiatives; to use the position we are in, the strength that we have — both in terms of people and funding — to continue to spend our strategic funds in the best way possible.

Hilmer, a former CEO of what is now Fairfax media, joined UNSW in 2006 after a tumultuous period in its history, having seen the forced resignations of two vice-chancellors — John Niland and Rory Hume.

In the early nineties, Hilmer led a review of national competition policy, the report of which (the Hilmer Report) led to landmark reforms.
