Staff at Perth’s Edith Cowan University (ECU) have voted in favour of an ‘in principle’ collective agreement, guaranteeing a 4% per annum wage increase over the next four years. The final details are to be negotiated between the National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU) and ECU management over the next few months, with the first wage increase scheduled for 30 June.
Gabe Gooding, NTEU WA Division Secretary, said that the union had been able to put a compelling case for the wage rise and other improvements.
A staff survey undertaken by the NTEU last March-April pinpointed the main issues. Workloads were crucial for academic staff with higher salaries the number one concern of professional staff. Job security, better opportunities for promotion, reclassification procedures and more family-friendly workplaces were also priorities.
