Urban Scrawl revisited

urban-scrawl2

4 October 2012 Urban Scrawl was the first of the Life & Stuff posts to The Scan on 2 February.  Just some stuff around inner Melbourne , including work by street artist Precious Little Remains, from whom we pinched the theme and acquired a copy of Gas Mask Girl.  There's a great poem by Michelle of The Takeaway Poetry Service, banged out in half an hour  on old Olivetti typewriter, which comes complete with typos and jumped letters - unfortunately it's not readable in the gallery but we'll post it separately.  The Scan has a vastly expanded readership, stretching from coast to coast and over the seas since then so it's time to share it again,  , in slightly amended form, as we do … [Read more...]

International regulation requires “nuance”

The Australian    |    4 October 2012 The Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency (TEQSA) needs to ensure it has the expertise to understand "nuances" in international education as it applies its new standards framework, Flinders University's deputy Dean Forbes has warned. This is a big and highly complex part of the university sector. We need to know that the people managing the standards framework have a capacity to understand the nuances that come from a deeper understanding of what happens in international education. While TEQSA is not targeting international education specifically, Forbes said its stated focus on English-language standards and third parties was … [Read more...]

TAFE cuts impact most severe in the west

VU 2

4 October 2012 Analysis by Lead West, a regional development and advocacy organisation, shows that TAFE funding cuts will impact most heavily in the western region of Melbourne, which has generally lower education and training attainments than the rest of Melbourne and significant pockets of  social and economic disadvantage.  The report concludes that the long term ramifications of the funding cuts are an increased likelihood of declining levels of employability due to lack of skills and qualifications (with associated health and mental health costs to government and the community). At the 2006 census, 54.4% of the population in Melbourne’s west had no qualification whereas the … [Read more...]
