9 August 2012 I am a mother of two Primary School children. At 45 years of age I have returned to school and am currently studying Professional Writing and Editing. It was no easy choice, and a deliberate and considered decision. At the end of this year I will have completed half of a Certificate IV qualification. If the course is cancelled, this half a unit will not be transferable to any other degree. If the course continues at another Campus, I may not be able to get there. I have no other formal qualifications. Click the button to go to Louise's website - A cat among pigeons. … [Read more...]
Evans warns on Vic TAFE cuts
Media Centre 7 August 2012 Victoria's share of federal incentive funding for vocational reforms could be at risk unless it relents on cuts to its public TAFE sector, Commonwealth Tertiary Education Minister Chris Evans warned after meeting with students affected by the TAFE cutbacks in Victoria. …we don't want to punish the TAFEs in Victoria Victorian TAFE students by reducing Commonwealth contribution to Victorian TAFE funding. ..But equally, there's no point in the Commonwealth Government increasing funding to Victorian TAFEs if in fact the overall funding is being reduced by the state's pulling their funding out…the Commonwealth will obviously have to look at its options … [Read more...]
Elite unis attacked over fees
The Australian 8 August 2012 Angry that the Group of Eight, led by University of NSW vice-chancellor Fred Hilmer, is publicly spruiking for the removal of fee caps at the same time universities are attempting to agree on a joint position, UWS acting vice-chancellor Rhonda Hawkins has broken ranks and called for a more open debate on the issue. The euphemisms about fee flexibility and fee deregulation have to be debunked. It is a fee increase. It lacks the integrity of an open and public debate. Hawkins's attack also into question the ability of Universities Australia to develop a unified policy to take into the next election. She said although there appeared little prospect of … [Read more...]

Hilmer’s pitch on deregulating fees
UNSW Newsroom 8 August 2012 What's been largely lost in the heated debate over fee deregulation is the urgency of the financial situation facing our universities. Revenue is simply failing to keep pace with costs, as evidenced by the number of universities now engaged in redundancy programs in an effort to reduce spending. Universities should be able to charge a higher student contribution for selected “premium” degrees, such as medicine, law, engineering and business, which qualify graduates for well paid professional careers - the higher the potential private benefit, the higher the student contribution. Under HECS-HELP, repayments are only made when a certain income … [Read more...]
Student politics: no multi-grain at a white bread barbecue
Daddy Issues 7 August 2012 It's the ANU Union election time. A student's take on "Democracy… In… Action!" This year seems particularly dry of even a glimmer of political motivation beyond the candidates’ CVs and the fantasy of a promising future career in politics. It’s a veritable farmers market out there. We have the emergence of the new player, Fresh, alongside Union veteran (criteria: elected at least once) Grow. Just when you thought that we couldn’t get any more vegetables, another party has emerged into the election from a sluggish build-up, Back to the Future. Their name diverges from the salad analogy, however it alludes some sort of ambiguity to their … [Read more...]
