The Age     1 August 2012

Swinburne vice-chancellor Linda Kristjanson has detailed the extent of funding cuts that have forced the university to close TAFE courses and make hundreds of jobs redundant.

Professor Kristjanson says funding for Swinburne’s theatre arts courses, based at Prahran, was expected to fall from $3.2 million to $1.8 million next year.

The Prahran campus offers courses in theatre arts, specialist make-up, costume, dance and live performance.

I wish to provide staff and students with the strongest possible assurance that we will be doing everything we can to ensure that these courses remain viable and sustainable,” Professor Kristjanson said.

The university will increase fees to continue offering the courses.

Swinburne would need to spend $100 million over five years to improve infrastructure at the Prahran campus, Kristjanson has toldthe National Tertiary Education Union.

Swinburne will fund a new building on its main Hawthorn campus with money raised by selling off part of its Prahran site.
